The Dilemma of Hair Transplant: To do or not to do?

PRP therapy

The first thing that pops up in the minds of hair transplant seekers is doubt, apprehension and anxiety. And this is rightfully so, because hair treatments are extremely expensive and risky, for they, sometimes, don’t even work. But not to worry, we’ve got your basics covered! If you’re looking for an honest guide about the price and success rates of PRP hair transplants, keep reading.

What is PRP and how is it done?

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) technique uses the skin healing power of platelets to stimulate cell production and reverse a balding scalp. It works by using an adequate amount of your own blood, separating the platelets, concentrating them, and then finally, injecting them onto your scalp.
The treatment is done thrice, with a three to four week interval. Similarly, you will need to get regular touch-ups every 4 months or so.

PRP has been popular among the international beauty community for some time now, but it has only recently gained fame in Pakistan.

Advantages:

A non-surgical, less painful alternative which provides natural-looking and safe results. The procedure is very simple and efficient. This technique will not just prevent hair loss, but also regrow hair in case of balding, increases hair strength and thickness. There’s a fair chance of the treatment being successful.

But what’s the catch?

Like all other hair transplant technique, PRP too has a few disadvantages. To put it simply, the treatment might not work, and you’ll have wasted a large amount of money. Moreover, there are chances of infection as well as nerve or tissue damage if it isn’t done properly. The injection might also cause pain and discomfort.

What to look out for:

Make sure the doctor is a certified and registered surgeon, not just an MBBS graduate. Look at how much experience he/she has had and from where. The doctor should also be a member of Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons and the hospital should be registered with Pakistan Health Commission.

Price Range:

PRP hair treatment costs in Pakistan vary according to the instruments employed. Some salons use American PRP equipment, and consequently, their treatments cost more; approximately 15,000 PKR to 25,000 PKR. They’re expensive due to the high-quality tools, experienced doctors and the material used. However, the salons which do not utilise US made kits, provide cheaper rates; from 8,000 PKR to 10,000 PKR.

PRP Hair treatment costs in Karachi range from approximately 10,000 PKR to 20,000 PKR, while  rates in Lahore are slightly higher; starting from 12,000 PKR and rising up to 20,000 PKR.

Guidelines:

It is suggested to stop taking anti-inflammatory medicines and steroids three to four days before the treatment, and eat a healthy breakfast and plenty of water on the day of the transplant.
After the procedure, rest and avoid any medications unless allowed by your physician to avoid adverse reactions. Within a few days, you can start applying an ice pack on the injection site to reduce pain.

Make sure to get a follow-up treatment after four months to encourage long-term healing and check if your recovery is going well. The doctor will instruct and advise you accordingly.

In short, PRP, like other hair treatments, has its pros and cons. Since the plasma is autologous, the chances of adverse reactions are low, but if it is not done carefully, the treatment will have repercussions. Depending on your city, in Pakistan, the price will vary from 8,000 PKR to 25,000 PKR. Its essential requirements include an experienced, certified expert with good equipment.
