How do you repair a small roof leak?

Roof leaks are very painful and require instant repairing, however, they are not that difficult to repair and not as much time consuming as they seem. There are many ways to repair a roof leak but four of the easiest ways are:

  1. The process of repairing asphalt shingles.
  2. Processes of repairing damaged roll roofing.
  3. The process of changing damaged wood shakes.
  4. The process of sealing seeps out joints.

Let us talk about the processes of repairing the roofs now:

The process of repairing asphalt shingles:

before starting your repairing process you must detect from where your roof is leaked; find the crack or break in the roof or if you can't find the crack, search for a wet or moldy part of the roof. After detecting the leak inspect it for missing or cracked shingles. See the condition of your whole roof and examine to see if a lot of shingles are missing or have a lot of signs of tear and wear. Sometimes, with time the sides of the shingles are curled. You should smooth out the curl edges and after smoothing it apply roof cement on it.  After the cement applies roof sealant on it to lock your cement. Lastly, change the broken shingles with new shingles and your roof is as good as new.

Processes of repairing damaged roll roofing:

again look for cracks on your roof, especially around the roof’s chimney, other objects on the roof, ventilating area and joints. You may find air bubble, crack or blisters on the roof. If you find any blisters or bubbles on the roof you need to cut them from the middle. If the bubble contains water; soak it and let it dry for 12 hrs. after drying, apply roofing cement on it and under it and remove the roofing substrate if it's spoiled (only if necessary). Finally, cover that is an area with a patch of roll roofing and roofing cement to seal your roof. Visit this link to get your roof a perfect shape http://www.jnsconstructioninc.com/monroe-roofing/

The process of changing damaged wood shakes:

check for damage for outside of ceiling and from inside too. If you see that there are damaged shakes then scrap them out with a chisel and hammer, keep your hand steady to stop for damaging other shakes. Cut off the nails of the spoiled shakes (take care of your hand), then measure the area and cut a new shake to fit that area. Slide the new shake in the empty place and secure it with 2-5 galvanized nails, seal the nails with roofing cement and any other area that seems naked to you. If your roof previously had a sealant than apply the sealant again. Your roof is fixed now.

The process of sealing seep out joints:

for this process, you need to especially inspect those areas of your roof that have some sort of opening like vents or chimneys because sometimes their edges are left open. Look for a small crack in those areas (small cracks are easy to fix as they can be fixed with roof sealant or cement). Inspect the gaps and if they are .65 cm wide then fill those gaps with sealant but before that clean all the old debris and area of the gap. If there are big gaps of leaks than replace the large areas of failing flashes use cement and sealant if necessary.

Now you can easily mend minor roof issues without any difficulty or without calling for professional help.  A lot of fixes are simple, however, its better if you call for professional help if you are having difficulty in mending the roof (especially if your roof is old 15+ years)
