GST Registration Process

The Government has introduced Goods and Services Tax otherwise known as GST in September 2017 and all entities involved in the buying or selling or providing services in India are required to be registered under GST.  Hence, all these business houses whether they are big or small should get registered under GST. Who should get GST Registration?

Any person or entity providing taxable supply of goods or services to persons in India whose aggregate annual turnover is more than Rs 20 lakhs should be registered under GST. But in some special category states such as Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, the aggregate turnover has been reduced to Rs 10 lakhs. Other than the aggregate turnover criteria, all those person who undertake inter-state supply of goods or services or have a VAT account or service tax or central excise are required to be registered under GST.

Documents Required for GST Registration

Let’s see here the documents that are necessary for registration of GST.

  • PAN Card of the Business or Applicant:

GST registration is linked to PAN of the business and it is mandatory for the business to get PAN as a legal entity.

  • Identity and Address Proof along with photographs:

For Identity proof, the applicant must submit copies of the documents such as PAN< passport, driving license, aadhaar card and voters identity card. As for the address proof, copies of documents such as passport, driving license, aadhaar card, voter’s identity card and ration card should be submitted. Let’s see who should submit these address proof and identity proof.

  • Proprietary Concern – Proprietor
  • Partnership Firm/LLP – Managing/Authorized/Designated Partners (personal details of all partners should be submitted but photos of only ten partners including the Managing Partner should be submitted)
  • Hindu Undivided Family – Karta
  • Company – Managing Director, Directors and the Authorized Person
  • Trust – Managing Trustee, Trustees and Authorized Person
  • Association of Persons or Body of Individuals – Members of Managing Committee (personal details of all members are to be submitted but photos of only ten members including that of Chairman are to be submitted)
  • Local Authority – CEO or his equivalent
  • Statutory Body – CEO or his equivalent
  • Others – Person(s) in Charge
  • Business Registration Document:

Proof of business registration must be submitted for all types of entities. In case of proprietorships, there is no need to submit this document as and proprietor and the proprietorship are considered the same legal entity. In case of partnership firm the partnership deed must be submitted. In case of LLP or Company, the Incorporation Certificate from MCA must be submitted and registration certificate in the case of society, trust, club, government department or body of individuals.

  • Address Proof for Place of Business:

An address proof must be submitted for all the places of business mentioned in the GST registration application. The following documents are accepted for the same purpose:

  1. For Own Premises: latest Property Tax Receipt or Municipal Khata Copy or copy of Electricity Bill.
  2. For Rented or Leased Premises: a copy of valid  rental agreement along with latest Property Tax Receipt or Municipal Khata Copy or copy of Electricity Bill. If rental agreement or lease deed is not available, then an affidavit to that effect along with a copy of electricity bill should be submitted.
  3. SEZ Premises: If the principal place of business is located in SEZ or the applicant is an SEZ developer, necessary documents/certificates issued by Government of India must be submitted.
  4. All Other Cases: For all other cases, a copy of consent letter along with the electricity bill is enough.
  5. Bank Account Proof: Scanned copy of the first page of bank passbook or the relevant page of bank statement or scanned copy of a cancelled cheque containing the name of the Proprietor or Business entity, Bank Account No, MICR, IFSC and Branch details including the code.
